In case you wonder what we are about...we are dealers in Fine Mineral Specimens catering to Collectors, Researchers and Museums. We found that many people involved in the preparation of mineral specimens (essentially a process of selective removal of silicates with fluoride) are using HF with only the degree of care that regular acids require... very risky because far more care is needed with HF than with other acids.
With a strong background in chemistry and pharmaceuticals (over 20 years in the industry) we urge one to get adequate training in handling HF and to always have calcium gluconate gel on hand to use in case of accidental acid contact. We offer Calcium Gluconate Gel to all users of HF since the acid has numerous other applications: biology, chemistry, electronics, engineering. The gel is not an FDA-approved product irrespective of who makes it or markets it . It is a chemical, not a medicine.
We stock Calcium Gluconate Gel 2.5% in four different packaging units: |
Calcium Gluconate Gel This gel just may save your skin if you use hydrofluoric acid, HF in cleaning minerals...or for whatever other purpose. HF is a specially dangerous acid. In case of spillage on skin, the manufacturers of HF and chemical safety officers recommend you wash the skin immediately with cold water and then liberally apply the gel to the affected area keeping it on until you get medical attention. From us the gel is $40 for a 60 gram (2 oz.) container. This is not an FDA-approved product and we do not sell it as medicine. We make no claims of penetration into skin than sodium bicarbonate. It is essentially a chemical in a viscous water-based solution. We provide it on the recommendation of safety officers. We have not made any clinical effectiveness tests on our gel, or that of others. Some researchers theorize that it works by providing calcium to HF that the skin may have absorbed, so HF does not take as much calcium from tissues. Research literature indicates that the gel is useful to decrease the effect of HF spilled on skin but we stress that it should NOT be considered an alternative to seeking prompt medical attention or clinical evaluation for hydrofluoric acid spills on skin. Fluorides like ammonium bifluoride, boron trifluoride etherate and tetrabutylammonium fluoride that are also frequently used chemicals can transfer fluoride ion into the skin like HF so one should have gel for these too. Literature references: 1) Segal, Eileen, B, "First Aid for a Unique Acid: HF" Chemical Health and Safety, Sept/Oct 1998 vol. 5, # 5, p 25. 2) Bronstein, A. C. and Currance, P. L. "Emergency Care for Hazardous Materials Exposures" Mosby Company 1988. Some practical aspects for HF use: have water always ready to rinse off acid from skin in case of suspected contact. Pay particular attention to the area underneath the fingernails. Be sure gloves are approved for HF, and are not punctured. Do not work in awkward ways: like trying to measure out 3 ml of acid from a heavy 4L container into a tiny graduate in a crowded hood! Read MSDS on HF. Apply gel liberally to area suspected of HF contact after thoroughly rinsing off acid with water and then, still keeping the gel on the skin, see doctor to be sure all is fine because late symptoms may still develop (doctor can inject special injectable calcium gluconate into the area...not the gel). Gel is very slippery: you cannot safely drive to the doctor with it on your hands. As serious symptoms may take some hours to develop, HF users may want to ask their supervisor to check out a gel tube for use at home in case of unsuspected contact late in the day at work. The gel itself is a low toxicity product; it is the HF which is hazardous. MSDS of Calcium Gluconate monohydrate powder active ingredient of gel, download as an MS Word Document or http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/C0384.htm While on the subject of HF, one may note that to discard unwanted or used-up supplies of HF , other than a ml or two, one should not flush it down the drain (where it can cause problems with biodgradation of waste) or neutralize it with sodium carbonate (which converts it to the highly toxic sodium fluoride). It is probably best to add the diluted acid to a slurry of excess lime (calcium hydroxide) in water with stirring. This converts it into the insoluble calcium fluoride essentially a harmless or almost harmless product which you can dispose of according to the rules in your area.. |

Rare Earth Element (REE) Oxide Kit or Collection. REE Oxides of high purity (better than 99.9%) in screw-cap vials of 1 g each :
Cerium Oxide Praeseodymium Oxide Neodymium Oxide Samarium Oxide Europium Oxide Gadolinium Oxide Terbium Oxide Dysprosium Oxide Holmium Oxide Erbium Oxide Thulium Oxide Ytterbium Oxide Lutecium Oxide
Also included are: Lanthanum Oxide Yttrium Oxide Bastnaesite |
The 16-vial Rare Earth Element Oxide Kit For research or display; it shows the different colors of the oxides well through the clear glass The last three are there because: La gave the group their name, the Lanthanides, and is closely associated with them both in nature and in the mind of whoever cares about such things; Yttrium Oxide is there above La in the Periodic Table and may be of interest to some, and Bastnaesite is included because this is the natural source REE mineral that the Rare Earths are laboriously separated from; the process of separation is not easy even today. The separation of the Rare Earth Elements from one another is a tribute to Separation Science (this part of technology usually goes unnoticed!) and is probably second in difficulty only to the separation of isotopes. We do not have Promethium because its most stable isotope Pm147, is quite radioactive (half life 2.62 years, it occurs in traces in uranium minerals). If you need more than 1 g in each vial or less, we can do that for you. For research or display; the kit shows the different colors of the oxides well through the clear glass. The 16-vail REE Oxide Kit with 1g of each sample is $400. We ship worldwide. |
