Mellite

Csordakut Mine, Tatabanya, Hungary

A very well crystallized specimen of this rare mineral. It is of scientific importance as being a salt of an organic acid (mellitic acid) whose anhydride, carbon suboxide, is the third oxide of carbon (besides CO2 and CO); aren’t you glad you now know?

The 2nd picture shows outstanding crystallization, (it really looks like scheelite and is also uv-fluorescent, unlike scheelite best in longwave).
